About
Effective altruism is about using evidence and reason to figure out how to benefit others as much as possible, and taking action on that basis.

This is a group for sharing content or asking questions relevantMore to effective altruism. Because the group is so large and active, we try to select the posts that we expect members will find most useful, interesting, and relevant.

If you’re posting a link, please include enough information that people can quickly tell what it is about and how it is relevant to effective altruism. And please keep threads self-contained by avoiding creating threads about other threads.

This group serves as a civil and friendly space to bring people together. Members who are disrespectful or hostile to others may receive a temporary or permanent ban. This is very rare, but we want to make sure all our members feel welcome and respected. In less serious cases, we do things like message posters. You can read more about the guiding principles that many people in effective altruism uphold: goo.gl/vrMjHV

Please feel free to message a moderator with any questions or concerns you may have. You can find us by clicking "members" then changing "all members" to "admins."

We encourage you to use this group as a way to explore effective altruism and meet like-minded people. Please consider posting an introduction in the pinned post and becoming friends with others from the group. We look forward to seeing you around! :)

Matt Clancy on the risks and benefits of biotech research:

A variety of forecasts about the potential harms from advanced biotechnology suggest the crux of the issue revolves around civilization-ending catastrophes. Forecasts of other kinds of problems arising from advanced biotechnology are too small to outweigh the historic benefits ofMore science. For example, if the expected increase in annual mortality due to new scientific perils is less than 0.2-0.5% per year (and there is no risk of civilization-ending catastrophes from science), then in this report’s model, the benefits of science will outweigh the costs. I argue the best available forecasts of this parameter, from a large… More

Hey all. I have a personal challenge.
I'm a student from Iran. And I want to be a more effective altruist. However I'm not sure how. So here are a few points to consider:
1.There are no channels like givewell.org for charities here. And most charities are horrible at best here.
2. As Iran is boycotted, sending money overseas is rather hard andMore inefficient (though more efficient than local charities)
3. as an student, I have little money to spare (few dollars every week).
4. Also as a double majors student, I have no time time to spare as well. So money is all I can do.

So what can I do?

"Positive Duties to Wild Animals" has officially been released! The special issue contains single-authored contributions from Catia Faria, Josh Milburn, Eze Paez, and Jeff Sebo; and co-authored contributionsMore from Mara-Daria Cojocaru and Alasdair Cochrane, and Oscar Horta and Dayrón Terán. To my knowledge, it's the first special issue on wild animal suffering since the double-issue that was released in Relations a number of years back (though volume 13 of The Ethics Forum was partly about wild animal suffering). Our 2022 end-of-year summary was published just five days before the launch of ChatGPT.More This event surprised many in the field, and the global spotlight has illustrated how important it is to understand human-AI interaction.

We hope to answer questions such as: What will be the next ‘ChatGPT moment’ in which humanity’s relationship with AI rapidly changes? This was so great (by Dylan Matthews).

I’m talking about a problem that, for me, giving 10 percent of my income away helps solve. One, it helps establish a baseline meaning or impact from my work — if nothingMore else,I know that the money I make through my job contributes to saving people’s lives. That has to count for something. That’s a source of real meaning and pride.
Two, it provides a powerful counterforce to the treadmill that comes as you age and make more money, a treadmill that pushes you to spend lots of it to keep up with your peers or feel like you’re living better. There are definitely times when I feel like I’m not taking as nice a vacation as my friends are, or where I feel kinda… More

The Humane League UK's most impactful annual fundraising appeal is LIVE. If you can, please consider making a donation today: thl.link/matchgiving.

Thanks to the generosity of our donors, Charlotte Monico andMore James Monico from the Founders Pledge community, all single donations will be doubled until Tuesday 28th November.

THL have recently been recommended by Animal Charity Evaluators for the 10th consecutive year.

“While we expect all of our evaluated charities to be excellent examples of effective advocacy, The Humane League (THL) is exceptional even within that group. Giving to THL is an excellent opportunity to support initiatives that create the most positive change for animals.
- Animal Charity Evaluators, 2023, on why they recommend giving to THL

We are really excited about this appeal as it is a uniquely impactful opportunity to drive progress for farmed animals. If you have any questions or would like to discuss payment options for a significant gift, kindly send an email to kschmidt@thehumaneleague.org.uk
